The Ballad About Battle |
Amidst melted candles and evening prayers Amidst war trophies and fires of peace Lived we book-learned children, the ones not knowing about battles Weary of our petty mishaps Their age and life is always annoying to children. We scuffled until our skin was raw, until mortally affronted But mothers patched clothes for us in due course. We were devouring books, getting drunk on the lines [of text] Our hair used to stick to our sweaty foreheads And the pits of our stomachs sucked sweetly(?) from the phrases And the odour of battle made our heads spin Flying at us from the yellowed pages And we tried to understand, the ones not knowing about wars. For a war cry, the adoption of a howl. The mystery of the word ‘order’, the designation of borders. The point of the attack and the clatter of war chariots And in seething cauldrons of previous massacres and unrest There is a lot of food for our little brains. We, for the roles of traitors, cowards, Judas In our childish games, used to nominate enemies And we did not allow the villain's tracks to go cold And we promised to love beautiful ladies And having placated friends and loving our fellow men We placed ourselves in the roles of heroes But it is impossible to escape permanently into dreams The time for having fun is short, there is so much pain around. Try to unclench the hands of the dead And to take weapons from tired hands Experience, having got hold of the still warm sword And having put on armour, what it costs, what it costs. Figure out who you are - a coward or destiny's chosen one And try the taste of real battle And when a severely wounded friend collapses nearby And you howl over the first loss, grieving And when you are suddenly left without skin Because they killed him, not you You will understand what you learned, discerned, found out Seized by a grin - it is the grin of death. Lies and Evil, take a look at how brutal their faces are And there is always a murder of crows and coffins behind If you did not eat any piece of meat from the knife If, arms folded, you were watching with disdain And you did not engage in battle with a scoundrel, with an executioner That means that in life you were innocent, innocent If while hacking a path with your father's sword You learnt something from your salty tears. If in hot battle you experienced what it costs That means you read the necessary books in childhood |
