Kupala Night |
It is not fog appearing white in the dark grove. The Mother of God is walking in the dark grove. Through green hills, along valleys She gathers God's wild plants at night But evening remained a deadline for them And even then the sun is already on the way out. With dark needles, spruce will obstruct the west And the sunset's golden iconostasis In the valleys it is already damp, dew has fallen. The meadows are already turning blue, shadows have fallen. It smells of lungwort beneath the dew. A golden crown shines through the grove Her white clothes are like fog. Her eyes are as blue as the stars. She will collect flowers and wild plants And carry them to God's throne Soon it is night - only night was left for them And in the morning they will be cut with scythes. But if not cut the sun will ruin them with its heat. So the Mother of God will say to her Son: “Have a look, beloved child at How the earth blossomed and flaunted itself! And it is a short life for earthly delight: In the world of Death, it reigns even over Life” But Christ says to her: “Mother! Not the sun But nocturnal darkness covers the earth! Death does not kill seed, but just clips Flowers from earthly seed And earthly seed will not run out. Death will mow down — Love will sow again. Rejoice, Beloved! You will be Rejoicing until the end of time!” |
